No jig was danced

[Letter from Ruth in response to an article by Ciarán Barnes]

Ciarán Barnes, in an article on the parades commission (May 19), wrote that residents are opposing a march "which will pass along the part of the Garvaghy Road where DUP leader Ian Paisley and former Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble did their infamous celebratory jig in 1995".

Neither Paisley nor Trimble set foot on the Garvaghy Road in 1995, as the parade was limited to members of Portadown District. Nor did they dance a jig - much though I’d like to see such an improbable sight recorded for posterity.

The memorable television pictures record them linking their hands above their head in Carleton Street as they reached the Orange Hall.

Like many others, Ciarán has been the victim of assiduous republican propaganda, which for almost ten years has been deliberately repeating a lie.
